Smart Home Automation, Networking and IoT Security

Home automation is only as reliable as the network under it, and only as safe as its weakest device.

Overview

We build the network that lighting, climate, shades, audio, cameras and locks depend on, and we secure the connected devices so the home is not an easy way in. We work alongside your automation integrator, or set up and support consumer platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa directly.

02

What we look after

  1. Network backbone

Wired drops, access points and switching sized for every device in the home.

  2. Integration

Systems from different makers connected, scheduled and tested together.

  3. Device security

Connected devices on their own network, updated, with default passwords removed.

  4. Monitoring

Devices and controllers watched, so failures are found before guests arrive.

03

Why smart homes feel unreliable

When a scene does not run or the lights stop responding, the cause is usually the network: a consumer router overloaded by dozens of devices, Wi-Fi that does not reach the garage or the dock, or an internet outage that takes cloud-dependent devices with it. The automation gets blamed for a network problem.

Security has the same root. Cameras, doorbells, TVs and hubs often ship with weak defaults and stop getting updates after a few years. We put them on a separate network that cannot reach the family's computers, change default credentials, turn off remote features nobody uses, and keep a list of devices due for replacement once their maker stops supporting them.

04

How we separate the home network

A typical design keeps each group of devices on its own network segment, with rules about what may talk to what.

The aim is containment. If a cheap camera or an old smart TV is compromised, the attacker should find themselves on a network with nothing else of value on it, unable to reach the family's laptops, the password vault or the building controls. The same separation also makes troubleshooting faster, because a misbehaving device on one segment cannot slow down or interrupt the others.

Segments are named and documented in the property record, so your integrator knows exactly where to connect new equipment.

  • Family: computers, phones and tablets used by the household.
  • Guests: internet only, with no view of anything else in the home.
  • Household staff: what their role needs, such as a printer or a calendar display.
  • Building systems: lighting, climate, shades, audio and automation controllers.
  • Cameras and entry: recorders, doorbells, locks and gate controllers, with remote viewing tightly limited.
  • Management: network equipment itself, reachable only by the people responsible for it.

How a private client engagement starts

Every private client engagement follows the same four stages, whatever the size of the household.

  1. Confidential call

People, properties and concerns discussed in confidence before anything is written down.

  2. Inventory

Every account, device, network and property system listed with its owner.

  3. Secure

Sign-in, recovery, networks and devices fixed in order of risk.

  4. Look after

Updates, monitoring and a direct line, with records kept current as the household changes.

Frequently asked questions

No. Those systems are programmed by their authorised dealers. We build and support the network they run on, secure the devices, and work with your integrator so each problem is fixed by whoever owns it.
