MSP vs MSSP: Do You Need Managed IT or Managed Security?

When you start shopping for outside IT help, you run into two acronyms that sound almost identical: MSP and MSSP. They are not the same thing, and the difference matters. One keeps your technology running. The other keeps it protected. Many businesses pay for one and assume they are covered for the other, which is exactly how gaps appear. Here is what each does and how to know what you need.

What an MSP Does

A managed service provider (MSP) is responsible for keeping your technology working. That means a helpdesk for your users, proactive monitoring and patching, network and device management, cloud and Microsoft 365 administration, backups, and IT planning. The MSP's job is uptime, productivity, and making sure your systems do what your business needs them to do.

What an MSSP Does

A managed security services provider (MSSP) is focused specifically on protecting your environment from threats. That includes managed firewalls, endpoint detection and response, email security, multi-factor authentication, security monitoring, threat detection and response, vulnerability management, and incident response. The MSSP's job is to keep attackers out and to respond fast when something gets through.

Why the Line Between Them Is Blurring

A few years ago you could run your IT and worry about security later. That era is over. Cyber attacks now target businesses of every size, and a single breach can cost more than years of IT budget. Because of this, the strongest providers deliver both: they keep your systems running and they secure them, under one accountable team. Splitting the two across separate vendors creates finger-pointing and gaps in the exact moments you can least afford them.

The Risk of Choosing Only One

If you hire an MSP with weak security, your systems run smoothly right up until an attacker walks in. If you hire an MSSP but nobody owns your day-to-day IT, you get alerts with no one to fix the underlying problems. Most small and mid-sized businesses are best served by a single partner who does both, so security is built into how your IT is run rather than bolted on afterward.

How to Evaluate a Provider

Ask any provider directly: is cybersecurity included or is it an add-on? Do you monitor for threats 24/7? Who responds when there is an incident, and how fast? What security layers come standard? A provider that treats security as optional is really just an MSP, no matter what they call themselves.
